Captain Nitish Rana and this season's revelation Rinku Singh came good for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as they rocked Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets in a must-win Indian Premier League (IPL) game at the Chepauk Stadium on Sunday (May 14). While Rana played a match-winning knock of 57 not out in 44 balls, the KKR captain was punished by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for maintaining a slow over-rate during the game.

A heavy fine of Rs 24 lakh was imposed on Rana as KKR failed to complete their quota of 20 overs in the stipulated time for the second occasion this season.

"As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Rana has been fined Rs. 24 lakh and each member of the Playing XI, including the impact substitute, is fined Rs. 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is lesser," read an IPL media advisory.

Rana was involved in a heated exchange with the on-field umpires during the game against CSK at Chepauk. The incident occurred before the start of the 20th over when KKR were bowling. KKR had failed to finish their quota of 20 overs in the scheduled time and thus were penalised. They were only allowed to keep four fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the last over. When the same instructions flashed on the big screen, Rana walked towards the umpires and gave them a mouthful.

Meanwhile, riding on a sensible knock from Shivam Dube (48 off 34) CSK posted a modest total of 144/6. Sunil Narine (2/15) and Varun Chakaravarthy (2/36) spun a web around CSK's batters with their exceptional bowling. In reply, half-century knocks from Rana and Rinku ensured KKR's facile victory over the four-time champions to keep themselves afloat in the playoff race.

In 13 matches played, KKR have lost seven games and won six contests. They are in seventh place with an NRR of -0.256.
