Harshal Patel’s purple patch in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 continues as he surpasses Jasprit Bumrah’s tally of wickets in a single IPL season. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) death overs specialist bowler has now taken 29 wickets in the ongoing season to top the list of most wickets in an IPL season by an Indian bowler.
The 30-year-old pacer took three wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to break the record. Bumrah took 27 wickets in the last season helping Mumbai Indians (MI) defend their title.
Overall, Patel is now third on the list of bowlers with most wickets in a season. The list is led by West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who took 32 wickets in 2013 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Bravo is followed by Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Kagiso Rabada who took 30 wickets in the last season to help his team get to the final.
Patel also surpassed Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Lasith Malinga and Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) James Faulkner who bagged 28 wickets each in 2011 and 2013 respectively.
With one more match to go in the league stage followed by playoffs, Patel has the golden chance to break Bravo’s eight-year-old record. Patel’s fortunes have changed since his transfer from DC to RCB. He has been equally destructive in both legs of the season. He even took the first hat-trick of the season against Mumbai Indians. In the first leg, he registered his best bowling figures in IPL, taking five wickets for 27 against MI.
