IPL 2022: Virat Kohli scripts special double hundred, joins Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina on elite list

SportsTak

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli scripted a massive record on March 27 (Sunday) as soon as he walked out to bat at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The Delhi-born batter played his 200th innings in Indian Premier League (IPL) as a batter in RCB's campaign opener against Mayank Agarwal's side.

Before Kohli, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Suresh Raina have achieved the rare feat.

Kohli's 200th inning

Kohli scored an unbeaten 41 off 29 deliveries in RCB's campaign opener. He walked in to bat in the eighth over at the score of 50. The 33-year-old played second fiddle in the partnership with skipper Faf du Plessis. The two shared 118-run partnership for the second wicket. In the death overs, he gave the strike to wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who contributed with a 14-ball 32 cameo. Kohli's innings included one four and two sixes.

Stats and records

Kohli is currently the leading run-scorer in IPL with 6,283 runs at an average of 37.39 with a strike rate of 129.95. He has hit five centuries and 42 half-centuries. His highest score in IPL is 113.13.

Notably, Kohli had announced before the second phase of the IPL 2021, that he will leave RCB captaincy from next season. In the IPL 2022 mega auction, RCB roped in former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis and appointed his as the captain of the Bangalore-based franchise.

Previously, Kohli was the captain of RCB since 2013 but during his stint as the RCB skipper for eight years, he could not win the prestigious IPL title for the franchise. Kohli has been a part of RCB team from the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008.

In IPL 2016, Kohli-led RCB managed to reach the final but conceded a six-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Kohli was phenomenal in the season as he scored 974 runs in the season, a record which is still unbroken.
