Relentless rain poured misery and played spoilsport in Ahmedabad on May 28 (Sunday) as the Indian Premier League (IPL) final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) was called off without even a single ball being bowled at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Heavy rains accompanied by strong thunderstorms dampened the mood of millions of cricket fans around the world on what was deemed to be a Super Sunday. The waiting game continued for a long time before the umpires decided to abandon the match on Sunday.
The IPL 2023 final is now scheduled to be held on May 29 (Monday), which was kept as a reserve day to tackle situations like the one that transpire on Sunday. But a question that several people have been asking is what happens if the rain plays spoilsport on Monday as well and Ahmedabad continues to receive relentless showers? Here's what you need to know.
What happens if reserve day is washed out?
If rain plays spoilsport and the match is abandoned and there is no possibility of a super over game, defending champions GT will win the title for the second consecutive time as they were at the top of the points table after the league stage with 20 points from 14 games.
As per the IPL rulebook, "In the event that it is not possible to start the Super Over as described in paragraphs 8 and 9 or to then complete the Super Over without interruption, the team that finished highest in the league table after the 70 matches of the regular season shall be declared the winner of the relevant playoff match or final."
Weather report
The good news is that no showers have been predicted in Ahmedabad during the match hours on Monday. According to AccuWeather, a 47% chance of precipitation is predicted for 4 PM IST and 6 PM IST in Ahmedabad. The skies are likely to become clearer after 6 PM IST and there is a zero percent chance of rain from 7 PM IST till 11 PM IST.
