Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off a stunning six-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Indian Premier League's (IPL) match no.54 at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (May 9). Suryakumar's blitzkrieg made RCB's daunting target of 200 look like a piece of cake and won the match for his team with 21 balls to spare. With this the five-time champions shot to no.3 in the IPL 2023's points table while RCB are once again reeling at the bigger stage and are wobbling at seventh in the standings.
Suryakumar cracked a whip and showed his batting prowess yet again and whacked a blistering 83 off 35 to make a mockery of RCB's big target. Not just him, Ishan Kishan also chipped in with a lightning 21-ball 42 in MI's winning cause. However, Wanindu Hasaranga provided RCB an important breakthroughs in the powerplay, as he removed both Ishan and skipper Rohit Sharma in the 5th over but to only delay the inevitable.
With this cracking victory, the five-time champions also shattered two all-time records in the cash-rich league.
Most 200-plus successful chases in an IPL season
Mumbai created a new record on Tuesday as they leapfrogged Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the most 200-plus successful chases in an IPL season. Earlier, PBKS and CSK held the record, having chased down 200+ targets two times in IPL 2018 and IPL 2014 respectively.
Before RCB, MI had earlier chased 200+ targets against PBKS and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing IPL season.
Winning with most balls to spare while chasing 200-plus target
Riding on Suryakumar's onslaught Rohit's brigade complete the chase against RCB in mere 16.3 overs. With 21 balls to spare in the chase, Paltans shattered Delhi Capitals' previous record of overhauling the 200-plus run target in quickest time. Earlier, in IPL 2017 Delhi had overhauled the target of 208 against Gujarat Lions with 15 balls to spare.
