The start of the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) was not good for Mumbai Indians (MI). The team, led by Rohit Sharma, faced defeat in the first two matches of the season. One major concern for them was the form of Suryakumar Yadav, which surprised many given his numbers in the cash-rich league.
However, his form soon returned and how!
The Mumbai local quickly caught the pace, and now has taken MI to the threshold of the playoffs. In their latest match, MI won by 27 runs after scoring 218 runs against the Gujarat Titans (GT), making a strong move towards the playoffs. Fans are now wondering what MI need to do to secure their place in the playoffs of IPL 2023.
To date, MI have won seven of 12 matches, after their initial losing streak. With 14 points, Mumbai need one more win to qualify for the playoffs. However, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) can also end the tournament on 16 points, so even with 16 points, Mumbai's spot in the playoffs is not guaranteed.
To secure a strong qualification for the playoffs, Rohit's team needs to win both their upcoming matches, finishing on 18 points and possibly reaching the top-2.
Mumbai Indians' eyes are set on their 6th title, but their next match away from home against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on a slow pitch will be a significant challenge for their batters. After that, MI will play their final league stage match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground. Winning both matches will bring them one step closer to the playoffs and give them a good chance of winning the IPL 2023 title.
