Root was signed by RR at his base price of Rs 1 crore during the IPL 2023 mini-auction. He is yet to make his debut in the league, with his team first securing a comprehensive win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad and then closely losing to the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

The Englishman is playing in his first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) season, and recently told his countryman and IPL teammate Jos Buttler in an interview for the league's social media handles that Yuzvendra Chahal has been 'looking after him' and that he was 'great fun to be around'.

“So everyone on social media’s been saying there’s a new friendship brewing between you and Yuzi. You actually like him, or like me, you entertain him and try and keep him at arm’s length?” Buttler asked Root during their conversation. To which, the former England Test skipper responded, “No, he’s great fun. I really enjoyed his company. Even though I have played a lot against him, I have never really gotten to know him before. I’m sure it’ll be entertaining throughout the tournament. He’s a good character.”

Root will hope to finally make his debut for the Royals when they face off against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday, April 8, in the first match of the day at 3:30  pm IST.
