IPL Media Rights: BCCI sells rights for Rs 48,390 crores, Disney Star and Viacom 18 spend big bucks for TV rights and app streaming

The media rights for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023-2027 cycle have been sold for a whopping Rs 48,390 crores in the e-auction making it the world's second most valued sports league of the world (per match).

 

Package A 

Disney Star have retained the TV rights to broadcast in India for a bid of Rs 23,575 crores. Earlier, Sony was leading in the TV rights after Day 2's bidding.

 

Package B

On the other hand, the digital rights have been sold to Viacom18 for Rs 23,758 crores which is Rs 183 crores more than the TV rights. The streaming of all matches in India and worldwide will be done by Viacom. This includes Package B which has been sold for Rs 20,500 crores (digital rights in India).

 

Package C

The Package C which includes a selection of non-exclusive 18 matches (more in 2026 and 2027 seasons)– a combination of weekend matches, playoffs and final – has been sold for Rs 3,258 crores to Viacom as well. 

 

Package D

The Package D which is TV rights for broadcasting and streaming outside the subcontinent has gone for Rs 1,057 crores to Viacom and Times Internet (Rs 2.6 crore per match). Times Internet will broadcast in MENA countries (Middle East and North Africa) and US whereas Viacom will broadcast in Australia, United Kingdom and South Africa. 

 

The official statement

“Now, it’s time for our state associations, IPL Franchises to work together with the IPL to enhance the fan experience and ensure that our biggest stakeholder – ‘the cricket fan’ is well looked after and enjoys high quality cricket in world-class facilities,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said in a statement on Twitter.

 

“The BCCI will utilize the revenue generated from IPL to strengthen our domestic cricket structure starting from grassroots, to boost infrastructure and spruce up facilities across India and enrich the overall cricket-watching experience,” he added.

 

Value per match

It was earlier reported that the number of matches will be increased in 2026 and 2027 editions. Adding the number of matches from last two seasons of the cycle, the per match value goes up to Rs 118 crore. 

 

(Note: This figure has been calculated considering there will be a total of 410 matches played in the next five seasons.)
