'Shubman Gill is following their footsteps': India's World Cup-winning captain compares GT opener with Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Kohli

With his stylish strokes and consistent output with the bat, Gujarat Titans' (GT) opening batter Shubman Gill has become the cynosure of all eyes. The elegant right-handed batter fired his franchise to yet another Indian Premier League (IPL) final and is currently gearing up to end the tournament in the same manner in which he has played throughout the season. Gill will be up against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final on May 28 (Sunday) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a ground where the GT opener has tormented bowling attacks for fun this season.

Gill has already secured the Orange Cap this season with an aggregate of 851 runs in 16 matches. He is averaging 60.79 with the bat and has scored runs at a strike rate of 156.43. The right-handed batter has smashed four fifties and three centuries this season so far.

After enjoying a stellar season, Gill has earned profound praise from fans and former cricketers. Team India's World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev joined the bandwagon and heaped praise on Gill ahead of the marquee final. Kapil stated that Gill seems to be following in the footsteps of generational batters like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Shubman Gill but also affirmed that the young batter needs to continue the prolific run-scoring rate.

"Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and now with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability but he needs more maturity," Kapil said on ABP News.

"If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he too could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It's too early (to say)," he added.
