MS Dhoni makes one surprising change against KKR to include Sam Curran

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni made one surprising change in his lineup against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Dhoni left out his in-form star performer Dwayne Bravo and picked English all-rounder Sam Curran in the side.

“He had a few niggles in the CPL, so we need to make sure he doesn't develop them further. The support staff is very important. Having experienced players in the side helps. In IPL it's about managing the combinations,” Dhoni said while announcing the change after losing the toss at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Sharjah.

Bravo hits purple patch

The Caribbean all-rounder hit a purple patch in the second phase of Indian Premier League (IPL)2021. He took three wickets in each of the two matches in CSK’s win an economy rate just over 6 runs per over. He contributed with a cameo down the order as well against Mumbai Indians (MI) where the CSK top order crashed in the powerplay orders and Ruturaj Gaikwad needed support from the other end.

Bravo’s fitness

The 37-year-old’s fitness has been an issue even before the resumption of IPL 2021. He did not bowl in several Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021 matches while leading St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their maiden title win. With CSK needing just one win to ensure playoffs spot, the CSK team management may look to save the veteran for the big games.

Curran’s return

The southpaw was unavailable for selection as he was in mandatory quarantine. In the first phase, he did not contribute much with bat but took nine wickets from seven games. However, his economy rate of 8.68 can be a problem.
