Delhi Capitals’ (DC) explosive opener Prithvi Shaw revealed that he has been admitted to hospital via an Instagram post. Shaw was not part of DC’s clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 5 at Brabourne Stadium. Skipper Rishabh Pant did not reveal the exact reason for Shaw's absence after losing the coin toss.
However, commentator Simon Doull said that Shaw had to return to the hotel because he was not feeling well.
“Admitted in hospital and recovering from fever. Thank u [you] all for your good wishes. [I] Will be back in action soon,” Shaw posted on his Instagram with his photo on hospital bed.
The 22-year-old will not be available for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash on May 8 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. This is a big blow for DC in a crucial clash. So far, the Delhi-based franchise has not released an official statement. It is unclear when Shaw will be able to return to DC camp.
In the last game, Mandeep Singh replaced Shaw as an opener and registered a five-ball duck. While Mandeep has failed to step up in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 when given a chance, DC can open the innings with Mitchell Marsh.
Also, they have a few options in Ashwin Hebbar, Yash Dhull and Srikar Bharat for the opening slot.
The 22-year-old has had a good season so far. He has scored 259 runs from nine matches at an average of 28.78 including two half-centuries. He has been destructive in the powerplay overs with a strike rate of 159.88.
DC have only one match next week against Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals on May 11. It is unlikely that Shaw will be able to join the squad even if he recovers in time due to Covid protocols. The young opener is likely to be available to play for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) clash on May 16.
DC are currently have 10 points from 10 games. They were placed fifth in standings before Royal Challengers Bangalore's fixture against SRH.
