Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Sanjay Bangar confirmed that their pacer Reece Topley will miss out on participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season after his injury in the team's opening game in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday (April 7) night.

The club have announced that a former IPL player, who last played in the league in 2014, will be making a return to the tournament, this time for RCB — Wayne Parnell.

The South African is an effective player with both the ball and the bat and had a good season in 2022. However, his recent form might raise questions about his selection by RCB.

Topley injured himself during the match against the Mumbai Indians (MI), dislocating his shoulder on his IPL debut at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. "Reece Topley has travelled back home and he has been ruled out of the tournament. We will be seeking for a replacement soon," said Bangar ahead of the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The injury took place in the eighth over of RCB's innings when Topley ran across and put in a dive to stop the ball. The left-arm pacer landed awkwardly on his right shoulder while sliding. He was wincing in pain and the RCB physio rushed to his aid. He had to be helped off the field and did not take any further part in the game.

Parnell has previously turned out for three former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises —  Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers and the Pune Warriors India. However, his stint with the erstwhile club from Pune went bad after he was one of 90 people detained by police after a rave party he was attending in a Mumbai suburb was raided in 2012.

He subsequently appeared in court and was bailed on drugs-related charges, and since then he has not been a part of any IPL club.

Meanwhile, another player Vyshak Vijaykumar has also been called up to the national team. He will replace the injured Rajat Patidar from the side. The pacer has 22 wickets in 10 T20 games and is yet to make his IPL debut.
