Shubman Gill has been a man on mission in year 2023 with eight centuries across formats so far. In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill has been on a record-breaking spree with three centuries from four matches recently. While Gill is being called ‘invincible’ by legendary Sunil Gavaskar, his Under-19 World Cup 2018 captain Prithvi Shaw’s future at Delhi Capitals (DC) is uncertain. Shaw had a forgettable season and has been criticised for his inconsistent run of late. Former Indian cricketer Karsan Ghavri criticised Shaw for being overconfident and not working on his fitness.
“They were in the same team that won the U-19 World Cup in 2018, right? Today where is Prithvi Shaw and where is Shubman Gill? They are in two different categories,” Ghavri told The Indian Express.
“Shaw thinks he is a star and nobody can touch him. But he needs to understand that at the international level, irrespective of whether you are playing T20, 50 over or the Test match or even the Ranji Trophy, it takes only one delivery to get you out.
“You require discipline and a good temperament. You need to constantly work on yourself. You are required to occupy the crease, and if you do that, you are bound to get more runs,” the 72-year-old said as he wants Shaw to work on his technique and fitness to get back into the groove.
Shaw vs Gill in numbers
Shaw registered two ducks and scored just 47 runs from seven innings. The horrendous led to him warming the benches for nearly a month as DC were way behind in IPL playoffs race. As DC were set to finish in the bottom two on the table, Shaw got another chance and he scored a half-century against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala encounter. However, he could not finish the season on a high and got out for a single-digit score against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
On the other hand, Gill has scored 851 runs from the 16 games at an average of 60.78 including three centuries and four half-centuries. He smashed a record-breaking 129 in IPL 2023 Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI) to help his side storm into their second final on the trot.
