Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 12 (Saturday) appointed South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis as their new skipper for the 2022 edition of IPL. Faf was roped in by RCB side at the mega IPL auction for an amount of Rs 7 Crore.
Former CSK player
Previously, Faf was a part of another IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for 9 seasons and he played a crucial role for the CSK team in the title-winning season last year. In a situation like this Faf recalled his initial days at CSK and his experience of playing under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
“The crazy thing is, when I started over in Chennai, I had this idea of what captaincy looks like. And MS was the complete opposite of what I thought it would have looked like! Because my culture was South African, right? So I came to this environment and I was like, ‘this guy was completely different than I thought what it should be!’” Faf recalled in an interview with RCB.
'Own style'
While recalling his journey, the 37-year-old South Africa batter said that “it is important that you need to be (have) your own style.”
“What it taught me was that there were different styles, but it is important that you need to be (have) your own style. Because that's the thing that always comes through when the pressure is on.
“So, I can't try to be Virat Kohli because I'm not Virat Kohli. I can't try to be MS Dhoni. But there are things I've learned that helped me grow my leadership style and mature. So, I'm grateful for that journey,” the new RCB skipper explained.
Previously, former India skipper Virat Kohli had announced last season, before the second phase of IPL, that he will not be the captain of RCB from next season. Kohli was the captain of RCB since 2013 but during his stint as the RCB skipper for eight years, he could not win the prestigious IPL title for the franchise.
RCB will start the upcoming 15th season of IPL on March 27 as they will take on Punjab Kings at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium.
