Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) batting juggernaut Virat Kohli smashed all-time Indian Premier League's (IPL) record as he smoked his seventh century in the glitzy league in a do-or-die match against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Sunday (May 21).
King Kohli rode on a spectacular 101 off 61 to go past Chris Gayle's previous record for most IPL centuries with his seventh ton.
Kohli took just 60 balls to touch the three-figure mark as he cracked 13 fours and a maximum in his top-notch knock. During the process, Kohli also became just the third batsman to whack back-to-back IPL centuries after Jos Buttler and Shikhar Dhawan.
Most IPL centuries
Virat Kohli-7
Chris Gayle-6
Jos Buttler-5
KL Rahul- 4
David Warner-4
Shane Watson-4
Meanwhile, riding on six fifties and two centuries Kohli has also crossed 600-run mark in the ongoing IPL 2023. Notably this is the third time he has achieved this feat in a span of 16 seasons. Notably, four of Kohli’s seven centuries came in his IPL 2016 season, when he amassed a record-breaking 973 runs which is still the record for most runs by a batsman in an IPL season.
Not just this, Kohli has also the joint-third most T20 centuries after Chris Gayle and Babar Azam. Kohli now has eight T20 centuries while Gayle and Babar have 22 and nine against their names.
Talking about the match, riding on Kohli's scintillating ton, RCB posted a dominating total of 197/5. Besides Kohli, skipper Faf Du Plessis scored 28 off 19, Michael Bracewell chipped in with 26 off 16 and Anuj Rawat cracked 23 off 15.
RCB need to win the match in order to qualify for the playoffs.
