Mumbai Indians (MI) wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan did not open the innings in the run chase against Gujarat Titans (GT). In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Qualifier 2 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Kishan got injured in the 16th over of GT’s innings and did not take part in the remainder of the game.
How Kishan got injured
The incident took place after the 16th over of GT's innings. Chris Jordan was putting on his cap but he was unaware of where Kishan was standing. The English bowler's elbow hit Kishan on the left eye. The wicketkeeper left the field after physios took a look at it. In the next over, Vishnu Vinod came on as substitute wicketkeeper.
Kishan's concussion substitute
As skipper Rohit Sharma walked out to bat in the run chase, Kishan was not with him. He had stayed off the field for last four overs of GT innings and could not open the innings. Later, it was made clear that the southpaw had a concussion. Vinod was padded up in MI dugout as Kishan’s concussion substitute. He came out to bat at no.6 in the 12th over of run chase.
Impact player Wadhera could not make an impact as an opener. He got off the mark with a boundary in the first over. But Mohammed Shami had the last laugh. Wadhera played across the line and edged one to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. He scored just four runs from three balls.
More injuries in MI camp
In addition to Kishan, skipper Rohit and Australian all-rounder Cameron Green got injured during GT’s innings. Rohit waa hit on his left hand. GT skipper Hardik Pandya found the middle of the bat in the 17th over. Rohit went for the catch but ended up injuring his left hand. He went off the field for a while to get treatment while Suryakumar Yadav donned the captaincy hat.
Earlier, in the 11th over, Green got hit on right hand's little finger in an attempt to save his face on the follow through from Shubman Gill's shot. Green fist-bumped Gill after that and completed his over. However, the Australian all-rounder went off the ground for a while as well to get treatment. When he came in to bat, Green was hit on his left hand and was retired hurt before coming to bat again.
