With just a day to go for the most extravagant cricket league in the world, Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) is all set to fire up the stage yet again in its 15th edition which will be played from March 26 to May 29. Meawhile, the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will lock horns with two-time title holders Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the inaugural match of the cash-rich league at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday (March 26).
Here's is everything you need to know about the upcoming India's cricket carnival:
Venues and stadiums
Four venues have already been decided for the IPL matches to be held and a total of 70 league matches will be played across these four international venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venue for the playoff matches is scheduled to be decided later.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will stage four matches each. On the other hand, 3 matches each will be held at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium, Pune.
With the addition of two new teams- Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, 10 teams will be seen vying for the prestigious IPL trophy in the 15th edition of Indian Premier League.
Previously, Gujarat Titans had roped in Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya and announced his name as the leader of their for the 2022 season. Apart from Pandya, the Gujarat-based franchise signed Indian batter Shubman Gill and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan ahead of the mega auction.
On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants had signed Indian batsman KL Rahul and The former Punjab Kings skipper will be seen leading the Lucknow team in the upcoming edition of 2022. Apart from Rahul, the Lucknow-based team landed Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi ahead of the mega auction.
Format of IPL
The 10 teams are slated to be played a total of 14 league matches (7 home matches and 7 away matches). After the completion of the league matches the four playoff matches will take place.
Each team will play five teams twice and the remaining 4 teams only once. 10 teams have already been assigned in two virtual groups based on the number of IPL titles won by the respective teams, followed by the number of final matches played by them.
The mega auction for the IPL 2022 was previously held on February 12 and February 13, in Bengaluru where franchises broke bank to rope in their favourite players with coveted IPL trophy up for grabs.
