The Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 match between MI New York and LA Knight Riders saw the latter lose by 105 runs after the Knight Riders got bundled out for 50 runs while chasing 155 runs. The team led by Sunil Narine could not even last for the full 20 overs, being dismissed in 13.5 overs itself.
MI New York scored 155 runs for eight wickets courtesy of Tim David's unbeaten 48 runs. This is the second consecutive defeat for the Knight Riders after he was beaten by Texas Super Kings (TSK) in the inaugural match.
Only one Knight Riders batter could cross the double figure. This was former U-19 India team skipper Unmukt Chand. who scored 26 runs. After him, the second-highest score for the LA-based was six runs scored by Adam Zampa. Four batters returned to the pavilion for ducks, while only one six and only two fours were hit in the LAKR entire innings.
50 runs is till now the lowest score in the inaugural edition of the MLC.
The Knight Riders lost wickets from the first over itself. New Zealand opener Martin Guptill was caught LBW off the spin bowling of Nosthush Kenjige without opening his account. Rilee Rossouw (2) and Nitish Kumar (0) walked back to the pavilion in the third over itself, off Kagiso Rabada's bowling.
Meanwhile, Jaskaran Malhotra scored five runs as he became Kenjige's second victim. Unmukt Chand, who won the U19 World Cup with India, stood firm at one end but it was difficult to score runs.
Eventually, after scoring 26 runs, he was caught by Trent Boult off Pollard's bowling. His innings included 2 fours and a six. Andre Russell (2) and Sunil Narine (2) also could not live up to the expectations. Boult ended the Knight Riders' innings with the wicket of Lockie Ferguson. All five of the MINY bowlers got two wickets under their belt.
Earlier, a brilliant innings by Tim David saved the MI New York batters on what was a top-order collapse on a bowler-friendly pitch.
Dewald Brewis scored 15 runs with two fours and a six but was dismissed early, after which Shayan Jahangir (4), Monank Patel (4), Hammad Azam (8) and captain Kieron Pollard (5) could not even touch the double figures.
The team were reeling at became 77 for five when Nicholas Pooran chipped in with a crucial 38 runs in 37 balls, hitting a four and 2 sixes.
After 18 overs, MINY was struggling at 120 runs for eight wickets as Tim David was the saviour of his side. He scored 48 runs with 4 sixes and as many fours in 21 balls. In the 19th over, he scored 15 runs by hitting Lockie Ferguson for a six and 2 fours.
