Watch: 'Mayhem in the middle' as Australia fail to cash in on a bizarre mix-up between New Zealand batters

In the second ODI between Australia and New Zealand on September 8 (Thursday), the onlookers were left chuckling after the Baggy Greens flopped an easy chance to send Black Caps captain Kane Williamson back to the pavilion for a golden duck. The incident occurred on the last ball of the first over bowled by Mitchell Starc when Williamson faced his first delivery of the innings.

Itching to get off the mark, Williamson defended the left-arm pacer's delivery on the off-side and set off for a quick single. Devon Conway, who was at the non-striker's end, first responded to his skipper's call but then changed his mind. At one point, both batters were jammed at one end. Sean Abbott covered the ground quickly to his right but his throw was well away from the stumps at the striker's end. Alex Carey collected the ball and threw it towards the stumps in order to catch Williamson short of the crease but the Aussie wicket-keeper missed the target.

The New Zealand captain failed to capitalise on Australia's miss as he was dismissed on the first ball of the 19th over by leg-spinner Adam Zampa. Chasing a mediocre score put up by Australia (195/9), New Zealand registered their lowest-ever score in the powerplay (14/3).

At the time of publishing this article, New Zealand were 60/8 in 28 overs, needing 136 runs in the remaining 22 overs.
