About Spencer Johnson
Spencer Johnson, born 16th December 1995, is a left-arm fast bowler known for his aggressive pace and wicket-taking ability. The Australian prospect was born in the famous city of South Australia. Adelaide. Sports runs through his family’s veins as Johnson's father, Greg, was a premiership footballer at South Broken Hill before joining the South Australian National Football League with West Adelaide, the club that Spencer's older sibling Oliver and younger sibling Isaac also represented at senior level. At the age of 22, Johnson made his List A debut in October 2017 for South Australia against Victoria and bagged a wicket into his account and helped his team win the match by 11 runs. Due to inconsistent performance, Johnson was delisted by South Australia prior to the 2020–21 season, however, he made a comeback to the team for the 2020–21 Marsh One-Day Cup following strong results in the South Australian Premier Cricket League. His performance made him selected for his home team Big Bash League, Adelaide Strikers, ahead of the 2020-21 Big Bash League season, but failed to get a single appearance. He was moved to Brisbane Heat and made his debut on 11 January 2023 in the 2022-2023 BBL season. He featured in ten matches in that season, including the final, and established himself as a dependable death bowler, but failed to be on the winning side.
However, he made his First-class debut in February 2023 for South Australia in the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield season tournament. He even improved with time as he picked up 6 wickets against Victoria and 7 wickets against Queensland. In the next BBL season of 2023-24, they won the league and it was the cherry on top for Spencer, as he was the Man of the Match in the final picking 4 wickets. In August 2023, Spencer also got recruited in Oval Invincible, for the English competition named The Hundred and showcased his bowling prowess by getting the figures of 3/1 off 20 balls against Manchester Originals. After his exceptional performance, he got bagged by Gujarat in the auction of season 2024 of the Indian Premier League for INR 20 Cr.
