Day 1 of the Hyderabad versus Nagaland Ranji Trophy 2023-24 clash turned out to be a run fest. At Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, Dimapur, G Rahul Singh smashes his maiden First-Class ton from just 143 balls. This is the second-fastest double century in the history of the Ranji Trophy. The record belongs to former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri who smashed a double ton for Bombay against Baroda at Wankhede Stadium in the 1984-85 season.
After Nagaland skipper Rongsen Jonathan won the toss and opened to field first, Rahul had to walk out to bat early as Rohit Rayudu got bowled by Karan Tewatiya in the third over. Rahul attacked Nagaland bowlers and shared a dominating 227-run partnership for the second wicket with Tanmay Agarwal. The opener scored 80 runs from 109 deliveries including 12 fours.
Tilak walked to bat at no.4. Rahul continued to hit big and reached his double century from 143 balls. He scored 214 balls from 157 balls featuring 23 fours and nine sixes. His sensational knock came to an end in the 54th over of the innings. Khrievitso Kense got the breakthrough. Tilak held on to one end whereas Chandan Sahani (23) and wicketkeeper-batter Pragnay Reddy (19) departed after getting good starts.
T Ravi Teja looked to score quickly as well. He scored 21 runs from 25 deliveries. Tilak reached his century and declared the innings in the 77th over. He scored 100 runs from 112 balls featuring six fours and four sixes. Hyderabad posted 474/5 on the board before declaring.
Coming out to bat in the last session of Day 1, Nagaland lost their opener Nzanthung Mozhui to Teja for a 14-ball duck. Joshua Ozukum and Sedezhalie Rupero ensured no more wickets fell towards the end of the day's play. Nagaland had 35/1 on the board after 11 overs with Ozukum unbeaten for 26 off 38 balls including five boundaries. Nagaland are trailing by 439 runs.
