County cricket has had many brilliant moments of their own since the inception of domestic cricket more than a century ago. One such day was June 21, 1901, a day that Nottinghamshire fans would never want to relive.
It was on this day that the entire team were humbled by one Yorkshire fast bowler going by the name of Wilfred Rhodes. The Englishman dismissed the Nottinghamshire batters for just 13 runs and is one of the darkest days in their cricket history.
The match was played between Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With Nottinghamshire bowling first, the Yorkshire batters was all out for 204 runs in the first innings, with John Gunn taking five wickets for Nottinghamshire. Meanwhile, only Lucky Denton played well for Yorkshire, with a score of 73 runs to his name.
Thus, based on the first innings, it looked like Nottinghamshire had taken the lead and now they can win the match. But what happened after that Nottinghamshire Cricket Club would never want to remember.
Chasing 204 runs in the first innings, the batters of Nottinghamshire could only play for 15.5 overs, with their entire team being bundled out for just 13 runs. Four batters were dismissed for ducks, while four runs were scored by Captain Arthur Jones. This remains his best individual score in the first innings.
On the other hand, Wilfred wreaked havoc on Yorkshire, and he dismissed six batters and conceded only four runs in 7.5 overs.
With Nottinghamshire scoring only 13 runs in reply to Yorkshire's 204 runs, the latter gave a follow-on to their opponents. After this, in the second innings too, the Nottinghamshire batters could not do anything special yet again and were reduced to 173 runs. This time, it was George Hirst of Yorkshire who took the wickets for 26 runs in 12.1 overs and gave his team a big win by an innings and 18 runs.
