Headlining the Major League Cricket’s (MLC) ‘Domestic Player Draft’ among the six overseas signings announced was former Australia skipper Aaron Finch, who will captain the San Francisco Unicorns in the inaugural edition of the United States’ new T20 tournament.
He will be joined in the league by some of the biggest names in international. like former teammate Marcus Stoinis, who joins Finch at the San Francisco-based outfit. The 36-year-old expressed his delight with a tweet.
These were not the only high-profile signings made by the Unicorns. They have signed Victoria fast bowler Brody Couch, whose mother is American, making him eligible for the draft, as well as the 2019 ODI World Cup winner Liam Plunkett and former New Zealand batter Corey Anderson.
South Africa’s Quinton de Kock will turn out for the Seattle Orcas with Mitchell Marsh and former Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Perera.
DC Freedom, ironically not owned by IPL side Delhi Capitals but by Washington Freedom, will represent the country's capital city Washington DC. They have brought on board Sri Lankan spin bowling all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje.
India's former U-19 World Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand has joined Los Angeles Knight Riders along with Ali Khan, who was a part of the side's sister club Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL but did not make a single appearance.
In the draft, US internationals Monank Patel and Steven Taylor were snapped up by MI New York, while former Canadian captain Nitish Kumar went to the Los Angeles Knight Riders. More overseas signings will be announced over the next few weeks.
The MLC tournament will be played between July 13-30 in Dallas.
Among the IPL teams, Delhi Capitals have partnered with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to co-own the Seattle Orcas. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) co-own the Texas-based franchise, Team Texas; Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have invested in the Los Angeles-based team, while the Mumbai Indians (MI) solely own the New York franchise.
