Bangladesh produced intelligent bowling and a calm batting display on the second day of the first Test match played at Mount Maunganui to control things against New Zealand.
The visitors reached 175 for 2 at stumps, with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy bringing up half-centuries.
Batters show a terrific display
Joy and Shadman steered Bangladesh through three overs before lunch and then to drinks in the middle session when the tourists were 43 without loss. Shadman eventually was out to the first ball after the break for 22, undone by Neil Wagner who lured him into a false stroke and dived to take a catch off his own bowling.
Wagner was the best of New Zealand's bowlers. But for the last two sessions Bangladesh defied the attack.
Kyle Jamieson, who took 52 wickets in his first 10 tests, struggled on Sunday and finished the day with 0-35.
Nicholls scores half-centuy
Earlier, Henry Nicholls made an agile 75 but New Zealand's tailenders failed to do something constructive on Day 2 of the first Test match against Bangladesh. Nicholls, who began the day on 32, was the last man out at 328 after notching his 12th Test half century.
Bangladesh scalped New Zealand's last five wickets for 70 runs only after it resumed its first innings at 258 for 5.
New Zealand had slightly the better of the first day after being sent into bat, helped by Devon Conway's 122 and Will Young's 52.
The loss of Tom Blundell in the last over before stumps on Day 1 left Nicholls to bat on a comparatively more compact base.
The southpaw reached his half century off 97 balls and he kept the total skipping with 12 boundaries. But the 30-year-old batsman hardly got any support from the other end of crease.
All-rounder Rachin Ravindra was sent back to the pavilion scoring just 4 runs, exposing the bowlers and Kyle Jamieson followed for 6, Tim Southee for 6 and Neil Wagner for a first-ball duck. Trent Boult was left 9 not out after hitting two boundaries off five balls.
Relying on spinners
Though Bangladesh team were encouraged to bowl first by the green pitch at Bay Oval, it relied on spin bowlers to bowl 38 out of the 108 overs to the Kiwis. The spinners wrapped up the tail after seamer Shoriful Islam dismissed Ravindra for the first wicket of the day. Shoriful finished with 3-69 from 26 overs.
Tailenders- Jamieson, Southee and Wagner fell to the off-spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque claimed the vital wicket of Conway on Day 1 (Saturday) and also dismissed Nicholls to end the Kiwi innings, finishing with 2-6 from 4.1 overs with his left-arm spin.
