The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up to host its prestigious annual award ceremony in Hyderabad on January 23. Scheduled just two days before the first Test match between India and England at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad, the 2024 BCCI awards promise to be a grand event.
This year's ceremony is particularly noteworthy as it marks the resumption of the awards after a four-year hiatus, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the achievements of the past three years will also be celebrated, with winners from 2020 onwards being honored. The ceremony is expected to be attended by the England cricket team, led by Ben Stokes, who arrived in Hyderabad on Sunday to begin their preparations for the Test series starting on January 25.
One of the highlights of the event will be the presentation of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to former India head coach Ravi Shastri. Shastri will join an illustrious list of past recipients of the CK Nayudu Award, including Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Syed Kirmani, and Kris Srikkanth. Additionally, Shubman Gill is set to receive the Polly Umrigar award as the best men's cricketer of the year for 2023, as reported by India Today. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, a five-time winner of this esteemed award, is unlikely to attend the ceremony following his decision to opt out of the first two Tests against England.
The last BCCI awards ceremony took place in January 2020, where India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah received the Polly Umrigar award in the men's category, and leg-spinner Poonam Yadav was honored in the women's category.
