Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid is said to be appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Dravid had emerged as the front runner for the Indian coaching post Friday night. The BCCI secretary Jay Shah along with Board President Sourav Ganguly had met Dravid seeking his opinion on whether he wants to apply for the Indian coach’s post. According to BCCI sources, Dravid has confirmed he will be the head coach of the Indian team and will step down as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) soon.
It is also reported that Paras Mhambrey has been appointed as the bowling coach and no replacement has been named for fielding coach R.Sridhar while Vikram Rathour will continue as the batting coach of the team. Dravid has agreed for two-years contract and will take up the charge of the team post the T20 World Cup.
The tenure of Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach Sridhar will come to an end post the upcoming T20 World Cup. Shastri is ineligible to re-apply for the position for the job owing to the age-restriction norms which are in force currently.
Earlier it was being reported that Dravid was likely to be the interim coach for India’s home series against New Zealand, which will get underway from November 17 where India will play three T20I and two Test matches.
With T20 World Cup being Shastri’s last assignment with the team, BCCI was looking for a new head coach and Dravid was always BCCI’s favoured candidate to take the top job. Few Australian coaches had also expressed their interest to coach the Indian squad, but the Board was keen to have an Indian take the charge of the team.
Dravid, who is in-charge of the NCA in Bengaluru, had travelled with the second-string Indian team for the Sri Lanka-India series earlier this year when the main team was in England preparing for the five-Test series.
