Exclusive: Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at players asking for rest, says ‘You won’t score runs sitting at home’

In 2022, Indian cricket has seen as many as seven captains across formats.  Even after Covid-19 restrictions and bio-bubbles have been non-existent in majority of series and tours, several players have been rested against major opponents and not just minnows. Senior players were rested when South Africa toured India for the five-T20I series. Seeing the trend of asking for rest frequently, former Sunil Gavaskar questioned players’ priorities and urged Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to revisit their contracts.

“I don't agree with this rest policy. You are playing for India! You don't take rest from IPL but want rest from international fixtures? You have to play for India. There is no need to talk about rest. And, 20-over games don't take a toll on your body. Test cricket does affect your body and mind but in T20Is there is no such problem,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak in a live session.

“I think BCCI will have to revisit the contracts of these players. In addition to contract, these players get match fees. You tell me whether top companies give their CEOs, Directors, Managing Directors so much time off despite paying huge salaries. If Indian cricket needs to become professional then a line needs to be drawn. If you are asking for rest then the (money) guarantees need to be reduced. How can they say that they don't want to play for India and want rest,” the Little Master further added.

Last week, BCCI announced India’s squad for three-ODI series in West Indies. Many senior players have been rested after the England tour and Shikhar Dhawan will be leading India on the Caribbean soil in the 50-over format. Recently, there were also reports that Virat Kohli has asked for rest from the five-T20I series against Nicholas Pooran-led side.

“I don't know the names of players who have asked for rest but I don't agree with it all. This is another thing. You won't score runs sitting at home neither you will get wickets. You need to step on the field and score runs, get wickets,” the 73-year-old shared his opinion.
