Former India opener Gautam Gambhir will be seen mentoring Lucknow franchise in the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). The decision followed the announcement of Andy Flower as the franchise’s new head coach.
The 2011 World Cup match winner is expected to have an advisory role in the team and will be the guiding hand when it comes to firming up the team’s plans and improving player performance. Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders have won two IPL titles.
The yet to be named Lucknow team has now two tenured senior players in Gambhir and Flower. Both bring a whole lot of experience with them and have some great cricketing sense which the team would look to munch on.
The Lucknow IPL franchise was bagged by Sanjiv Goenka-led RPSG group for INR 7090 crore. Earlier, Goenka had also owned Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017.
“The fire to win a contest still burns bright inside me, the desire to leave a winner's legacy still kicks me 24x7. I will not be contesting for a dressing room but for the spirit and soul of Uttar Pradesh,” Gambhir said after his appointment.
Gambhir, in his IPL's career span of 154 matches, had scored 4217 runs which were loaded with 56 half centuries.
