Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to miss the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, the Sports Tak has learned. Furthermore, Hardik is likely to regain full fitness ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is set to lead Mumbai Indians from the first match of the competition. The Indian all-rounder suffered an injury during the ODI World Cup which led to him being sidelined for the home series against Australia and the subsequent tour in South Africa in December.
India is scheduled to play a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan from January 11 to 17, which will be their last T20I engagement before the World Cup in June. Alongside Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav is also expected to miss this series due to an ankle injury sustained while fielding in a T20I match against South Africa in Johannesburg. The nature of Yadav's injury, suspected to be a tear, could require a recovery period of up to six weeks.
Regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians recently announced a significant change in leadership. Hardik Pandya was named the captain for the IPL 2024 season, concluding Rohit Sharma’s successful 10-year stint as the team’s leader, during which he guided Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. Pandya's return to Mumbai Indians, facilitated by an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans late last month, was a notable move in the IPL circuit.
Pandya's continued absence due to injury is a significant concern for both the Indian national team and Mumbai Indians, considering his impactful role as an all-rounder and a leader. His dynamic presence on the field and strategic acumen as a captain are invaluable assets, and his potential unavailability could lead to strategic adjustments for the upcoming series and the IPL season. As the T20I series against Afghanistan approaches, the Indian team management will be considering options to fill the void left by Pandya and Yadav’s injuries.
