The last few months have been quite hard for Rahul Chahar. Even after getting including in India's T20 World Cup squad over veteran Yuzvendra Chahal, he got to play only in one match. And now, Chahar has been dropped from the T20I squad and has been added to India A team for the South Africa tour. So far, there have been no explanations from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the decision to drop the leg-spinner. After the team selection, former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has raised questions over the controversial decision. Gavaskar has said that Chahar will be wondering what he has done wrong. The legendary batter added that the reason for his omission from the team will give Chahar an indication that where he will need to improve.
“Wondering what he has done”
“But Rahul Chahar will be wondering what he has done that he is not in the 16 that have been announced for the New Zealand series. He was good enough to be in the World Cup squad, he got one opportunity, gave away 7 and a half runs an over. He will certainly be wondering what he did wrong. And I hope the selection committee will actually tell him what he did is the reason that he is out of the squad,” the little master told India Today.
Even Varun deserves a reason to know
“Only if somebody tells them the reason, they can go back and get better and then come back stronger. That will be the only way Indian cricket will get stronger,” the 72-year-old added.
Both the Indian spinners were in the T20I squad for the World Cup. Varun Chakravarthy played three matches at the Super 12 stage remained wicketless whereas Chahar played only one match and did not get a wicket as well. BCCI dropped both the players from the national team that was announced on November 9 against New Zealand for three-match T20I series. While Chahar will still be in action against South Africa A, Chakravarthy is nowhere in the picture now.
