The cricketing world is set to witness a bustling start in 2024 as the second edition of the ILT20 league is slated to get underway between January 19 and February 18. However, it's not all smooth sailing for the event as it coincides with the five-match Test series between India and England, which kickstarts on January 25 in Hyderabad. This overlap raises significant questions about the availability of star players like Wood and Joe Root, who are integral to both the ILT20 and the England Test squad.
David Warner, another cricketing stalwart, is on tight scheduling. He is expected to wrap up his commitments with the Big Bash League representing Sydney Thunder by January 24. Immediately after, he will be jetting off to the UAE for his ILT20 engagement. However, Warner's participation hinges on acquiring a No-Objection Certificate from Cricket Australia.
Six formidable teams are preparing to battle it out in the ILT20 for the second consecutive year. Fans will witness the cricketing prowess of teams like Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Desert Vipers, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, MI Emirates, and Sharjah Warriors. A total of 34 matches are on the cards, comprising 30 group stage matches and four high-octane playoffs culminating in the grand finale.
Earlier this week, the ILT20 league had fans buzzing with excitement when they unveiled a galaxy of cricket stars set to participate. Names like David Willey, Josh Little, Alex Hales, David Warner, Mark Wood, Akeal Hosein, and Corey Anderson feature prominently across different teams.
Ambati Rayudu, roped in by MI Emirates, stands out as the solitary Indian representative in the league. Notably, seasoned players like Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa won't be returning for Dubai Capitals this season.
From Pakistan, the inclusion of cricket sensations Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, both now part of Desert Vipers, is sure to add a lot of flair to the games. Each team in the league can boast up to 25 players with a generous $2.5 million player pool.
It's noteworthy to mention that ILT20, along with the SA20, were the recent additions to the men's franchise leagues last year. Interestingly, these leagues see some overlapping club ownership with the iconic IPL.
