Few changes can be expected in India’s T20I side as they play New Zealand in home series starting November 17. As Virat Kohli has announced that the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 will be his last assignment as T20I captain, a new captain will be selected too by the selection panel, a source close to the development told Sports Tak. The T20I side for the three-match T20I series is likely to be announced on November 9, one day after India’s last Super 12 stage game.
By November 9, the selection panel will know whether India will go through to the semi-final of the mega event or not. It will also have an impact on the senior players they decide to rest for the T20I series.
On being asked whether current vice-captain Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul will be given the responsibility to lead the side, the source said it is yet to be decided but both are in fray. Also, the call will be taken during the meeting.
Rohit has been a successful captain for Mumbai Indians (MI) leading them to Indian Premier League (IPL) title five times since he took over the reigns in 2013. On the other hand, Rahul has not been successful as a captain leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) in two seasons.
Earlier, it was also reported that few senior players including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Virat Kohli and others will be rested for the T20I series against Kiwis. The reason behind it can be the long season including second half of IPL. Also, India will play New Zealand in the two-Test series starting November 25.
