Indian opener KL Rahul has given a major update on his injury which ruled him out of the T20I series at home against South Africa and the England tour. On June 29, Rahul posted on social media that he has underwent a successful surgery and thanked his fans for their support and prayers.

“Hello everyone. It's been a tough couple of weeks but the surgery was successful. I'm healing and recovering well. My road to recovery has begun. Thank you for your messages and prayers. See you soon,” Rahul wrote in a tweet.

Rahul suffered a groin injury which ruled him out of the five-T20I series against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa. In his absence, Rishabh Pant was made captain of the T20I team as all-format skipper Rohit Sharma was rested for the series.

Due to injury, Rahul was also ruled out of the England tour which includes the rescheduled Test, ODI and T20I series.

As Rohit contracted Covid-19 and there is a big question mark over his participation in the fifth Test starting July 1, Rahul would have been an automatic choice to lead India as he made Test his captaincy debut in South Africa earlier this year. However, in the absence of Karnataka batter, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead India against England if Rohit’s test does not return negative.

Rahul is also seen as India’s designated opener in the T20Is with T20 World Cup to be played in Australia later this year. It is yet to be seen when Rahul regains full fitness and makes his return to the field.

Earlier, Rahul scored 616 runs from 15 games at an average of 51.33 including two centuries and four half-centuries in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The 30-year-old Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to qualifiers in their debut season.
