After successful completion of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in two phases, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning for the 15th edition's start next year. According to few reports, the opening match of the tournament will be played on April 2, 2022 and the final will take place in first week of June.

With the addition of two new franchises in the form of Ahmedabad and Lucknow, a total of 74 games will be played in the season. The IPL 2022 may take over 60 days to complete. Moreover, the event will be back in India after the second leg of the previous season was rescheduled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to rising Covid-19 cases.

Even though the venue for the opening match has not been announced, it is likely to be played at Chepauk as Chennai Super Kings are the defending champions. Meanwhile, the dates of mega auctions are yet to be announced as well. The retention policy was revealed last month with a maximum of four players to be retained by existing eight franchises, and three picks for the new ones.

IPL 2022 Format

IPL 2022 format will be the same as IPL 2011. Ten teams will be divided into two groups, each group consisting of five teams. Every team will play two matches with the other teams in the group (overall eight) and will face the teams of the other group one time. Each team from both groups will play one additional match with the team from the other group, which will be selected from the draw. That means each team will play 14 matches in the group stage (8+6) and the top four teams will advance for qualifiers and eliminator based on their standing in the points table. Like the previous editions, there will be two qualifiers, one eliminator and the final.
