The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) might start earlier than usual, Sports Tak has learned. With India set to undergo general elections in 2024, the scheduling of the cash-rich tournament might get affected. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might be forced to schedule the start of IPL 2024 in the month of March and the tournament's end is likely to be around mid-May.
"Indian premier league 2024 might start early as the window for it is going to be tight because of the general election," a BCCI source told Sports Tak.
"We are aware that next year we have elections and we are planning IPL keeping that in mind. If required, we might start Next year's IPL early in March and the tournament will end by mid-May. As of now, everyone is focused on World Cup and there is a lot of time to decide on IPL. We will see what needs to be done as far as IPL is concerned," the source added.
IPL 2023 began on March 31 and came to an end on May 29. The two-month-long competition is likely to not stretch till the end of May 2024.
There is also a slight possibility of the tournament being staged outside India. Having said that, the decision on that will be taken later as the primary focus right now remains on the upcoming ODI World Cup which is scheduled to be played between October 5-November 19 in India.
"It's not that we have not managed IPL and the election before. We have done it in the past. It's too much time in hand to discuss it but will see if required to move out we might do that. As of now, it's too early to comment on it," the source said.
