Jasprit Bumrah has become the No.1 ranked Test bowler in the world. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on February 7 released the latest rankings and Bumrah was duly awarded for his remarkable bowling performance in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. After claiming the throne, Bumrah scripted enormous history as he became the first Indian fast bowler to achieve the No.1 Test ranking.
Overall, Bumrah became the fourth Indian bowler to occupy the top spot in ICC's Test ranking. Three Indian spinners - Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and the late great Bishan Singh Bedi - are the only others from the country to reach the No.1 ranking in Tests.
Jasprit Bumrah delivers a performance for the ages
In the recently-concluded 2nd Test against England, Jasprit Bumrah put on a performance that will remain indelibly etched in time. Bumrah destroyed England's batting line-up with a remarkable display of reverse-swing bowling. It was a masterclass of fast bowling from Bumrah, who hit the right lengths and bowled in impeccable channels which ultimately helped India register a must-needed victory.
The 30-year-old pacer was at his destructive best in the first innings when he sent six English batters back to the pavilion. In the second innings, Bumrah produced magic once again and bagged three crucial wickets and finished with nine wickets in the match.
Jasprit Bumrah's imperious Test record
In the previous match against England, Bumrah notched yet another milestone as he became the quickest Indian pacer to complete 150 wickets in Tests. Talking about the right-arm fast bowler's overall Test record, the numbers are imperious.
In 34 Tests, Bumrah has bagged 155 wickets at an average of 20.19 and a strike rate of 44.55. He has bagged 10 five-wicket hauls in international red-ball cricket.
Ashwin skids to 3rd, Jadeja slips to 9th
Apart from Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the other two Indians in the top 10 of the ICC Test bowlers ranking. Ashwin, who was No.1 before Bumrah's ascension, is now the No.3 ranked Test bowler while Jadeja slipped two places and is now ranked 9th.
