The first champions of the inaugural Lanka Premier League (LPL), Jaffna Stallions have found their new owner. Sri Lanka-born British entrepreneur Allirajah Subaskaran has taken over the Jaffna-based franchise. Thisara Perera-led Jaffna Stallions won the first season of the LPL by defeating Galle Gladiators in the final by a comfortable margin of 53 runs. The franchise will be looking to win their second consecutive title under the new owner when the team will be on the field again later this year.
Subhaskaran words on his new innings
“I have been observing the gradual growth of the LPL. It has turned out to be a spectacular sporting event, and I believe that the LPL can become a major event in the cricketing calendar. Many Sri Lankans globally look forward to this tournament, with better funding and drafting of bigger names, the league is bound to be a global phenomenon, and I don't want to be left out of the party,” Subhaskaran commented on his new venture.
“Well, it makes sense to put your money on the team that won last year, and, I do have some sentimental attachments to the North of the Island," Subhaskaran explained why he chose the franchise.
LPL to be held from December 4 to 23
LPL will commence from December 4, 2021 and the final be played on December 23, 2021. The tournament was first set to run from July 30, 2021 to August 22,2021 but according to the tournament director Ravin Wickramaratne, the announcement of the Kashmir Premier League, the CPL, The Hundred, and another possible international series involving Bangladesh led to organisers postponing the second season of the T20 league.
