'Look for excuses or look to get better': Virat Kohli gears up for new WTC cycle weeks ahead of West Indies tour

Former India skipper Virat Kohli faced criticism of late as he could not convert a good start into a big score in World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia. While in the first innings he was surprised by extra bounce generated by Mitchell Starc, in the run chase he got out chasing a delivery way outside the off stump. India suffered their second consecutive WTC final debut but they have much to look ahead for as new WTC 2023-25 cycle starts with two-Test series on Caribbean soil starting July 12.

Kohli shared two videos of him working out at the gym along with a selfie on his social media accounts on June 19. The caption of the post read: “Look for excuses or look to get better”.

Recently, Kohli had shared that his mother, Saroj Kohli thinks that he is not well while others keep asking him what he eats to look so fit.

“Log fitness ki baatein kar rahe hote hain, woh shaam ko phone karengi match ke baad ki ‘Kitne kamzor lag rahe ho, kuch khaate kyun nahi?’ Maine kaha, ‘Yaar, ek taraf log pooch rahe hain ki kya kar rahe ho, aur ek taraf meri mummy bol rahi hai ki paranthe nahi khaate tum.’ Unko lagta hai main bimaar hun. 8-9 saalon se main bimaar hi hun. Mujhse kuch nahi keh raha, bata nahi raha hai mujhe!”

(People are constantly talking about my fitness and my mother would call me in the evening after matches and would be like, ‘Why do you look so weak?’ I am like, on one end people are asking me about my fitness routine, and my mother on the other end is telling me why I ain’t having Paranthas! She thinks that I’m ill. I’ve been ill for the past 8-9 years, and I’m not deliberately letting her know.)

When India tour West Indies, Kohli will have a chance to become 11th Indian batter to score 1,000 or more runs against West Indies in Test cricket. Kohli has scored 822 runs from 19 innings at an average of 43.26 including two centuries and five half-centuries. In process, he will also surpass Ravi Shastri (847 runs), Chandu Borde (870 runs) and Virender Sehwag (888 runs) on the list.
