On the cricket front, Shami emerged as a standout performer in the 2023 ODI World Cup, ending the tournament as the top wicket-taker. Despite missing the initial league stage matches due to selection preferences for Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin, Shami made a significant impact upon his inclusion. His opportunity arose following an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya during a match against Bangladesh.

Seizing this chance, Shami made a remarkable entry with a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Dharamshala. He maintained his high level of performance throughout the tournament, breaking several records along the way. In the final against Australia, Shami managed to claim the wicket of David Warner but was unable to halt Australia's charge to the title.

The final, played on Sunday, November 19, saw Australia defeat India by six wickets, securing their record-extending sixth ODI World Cup victory. India, batting first in the final, posted a total of 240 runs, bolstered by half-centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. However, Australia's Travis Head played a pivotal role with a brilliant century, ably supported by Marnus Labuschagne's half-century, to steer Australia to a comfortable victory.

This loss meant India missed out on securing their third ODI World Cup title and marked the second time in history that they have lost a World Cup final to Australia. The final showcased the resilience and skill of both teams, with Australia ultimately emerging victorious in a highly competitive and enthralling match. For India and Shami, despite the loss, the tournament was a display of skill and teamwork, with Shami's individual performances standing out as some of the most impressive in the competition.
