In a significant move, the BCCI reportedly made a special appeal to the Sports Ministry to consider Shami for the award, as his name was initially not on the list for the country's second-highest sporting honor. This decision by the BCCI underscores the recognition of Shami's exceptional performance in the World Cup, where he emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker. Shami's impressive haul of 24 wickets from just seven matches was instrumental in India's successful campaign.

Shami's remarkable average of 5.26 wickets per game, particularly noteworthy considering he missed the first four matches of the tournament, highlights his effectiveness and impact when called upon. His consistent wicket-taking ability and excellent bowling figures have made him a key player in the Indian cricket team.

Looking ahead, Shami is expected to be a crucial part of India's squad in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. The series is scheduled to begin with a Boxing Day Test on December 26 in Centurion, followed by a second Test starting on January 3 in Cape Town.

The selection of candidates for this year's sports awards, including the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Arjuna Award, will be overseen by a 12-member committee constituted by the ministry. This committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice AM Khanwilkar and includes six former international athletes. The committee's composition reflects a blend of judicial and athletic expertise, featuring notable personalities such as hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay, former table tennis player Kamlesh Mehta, ex-boxer Akhil Kumar, women's shooting national coach Shuma Shirur, former cricketer Anjum Chopra, badminton player Tripti Murgunde, and powerlifter Farman Pasha.

This nomination for the Arjuna Award is a testament to Mohammed Shami's skill, dedication, and significant contributions to Indian cricket, especially his impactful performances in key international tournaments.
