New Year starts with a century; New Zealand batsman creates history

After the end of the year 2021, everyone wants to start all the new proceedings with a bang and Devon Conway of New Zealand did exactly that after he grabbed the focus of the first day of the year 2022. 

 

It was only a few hours after the new year, Conway scored a century on the Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh, played at Mount Maunganui ground, New Zealand. In this way, he became the first player to score an international century in the new year, 2022.

 

Second Test century

While this is the second Test century of his career and the first Test century on New Zealand soil and Conway would undoubtedly never want to forget this memorable innings. Bangladesh team are on New Zealand tour currently and the ongoing Test series is being played as a part of the World Test Championship. 

 

The southpaw completed the second century of his career and the first century of the new year off 186 balls. The 30-year-old batsman got out after scoring 122 runs off 227 deliveries. In his innings he had hit 16 fours and 1 six. 

 

Bangladesh skipper Haque picked up the crucial wicket of Conway. A length ball at leg stump, was bowled by Haque. Conway wanted to glance and but ended up getting a slight edge on that and wicketkeeper Liton Das made no mistake in taking the catch. Conway had to depart just an over before the second new ball.

 

Bangladesh opted to bowl first

After winning the toss in the match, Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque decided to bowl first and Kiwi captain Tom Latham got out scoring just 1 run and thus the first international wicket of the new year was claimed by Bangladesh bowler Shoriful Islam.

 

After this, Conway, who came out to bat at number three, played an excellent partnership of 138 runs with the other opening batsman Will Young. Their partnership helped New Zealand team to recover from the initial setback. However, Young went back to the pavilion after scoring 52 runs. 

 

While at the other end, Conway saved his wicket. He went on to play a 50-run partnership with veteran Kiwi batsman Ross Taylor, who was playing in the last series of his Test career.Taylor went on to make 31 runs off 64 balls. 

 

Till the time of writing the news, New Zealand had scored 258 runs losing five wickets. Conway scored 122 runs and Henry Nicholls was not out scoring 32 runs. 

 

Meanwhile, Conway scored his second century in just the 7th Test innings of his career. Apart from this, he has also scored 2 half-centuries during this period.
