No hike in Rohit Sharma's salary despite promotion

India’s new ODI captain Rohit Sharma will officially take charge of India’s ODI team permanently in the upcoming South Africa tour. The Mumbai-based cricketer will succeed Virat Kohli after the latter was sacked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Despite Rohit’s promotion, there will be no hike in the salary of this right-handed batter.

The BCCI on Wednesday announced that Kohli will no longer take charge of the side in ODI as Rohit was announced as Kohli’s permanent heir. Rohit and Kohli are part of BCCI’s annual contract in category ‘A+’; this makes them eligible for annual salary of Rs 7 crores (excluding allowances). The two star players are joined by Jasprit Bumrah in the list.

Rohit will not have any specific privilege in terms of the salary cap, but he is likely to have the veto power in the selection of players. Looking at the other side of the coin, the 34-year-old will probably face more sanctions in case of slow overrate than the rest of the team. The captains have been usually sanctioned a fine twice than any other member of the team.

Rohit does bring tons of experience with his Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians and he has also been the skipper of the senior Indian team in some tournaments. In his limited experience of international captaincy, Rohit did manage to secure terrific numbers. Rohit has won eight of the 10 ODIs he has led the team so far and it includes 2018 Asia Cup.

In the shortest format of the game, Rohit has 18 wins in 22 matches. Out of these, three came just recently against New Zealand at home in his maiden series as the full-time captain.

In terms of captains with the best win percentage, Rohit holds the second spot, behind former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan. The Afghan has led the national team in 52 matches, winning 42 and losing only 10.

In terms of the win percentage across T20Is (domestic and international), Rohit again occupies the second position in the list, with a win percentage of 62.98 (97 victories from 154 matches). Pakistan's Shoaib Malik leads the list with 85 victories in 133 matches (63.91 per cent).
