A major development in Pakistan Cricket took place on February 6 (Tuesday) when Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi was elected as the new chairman of the country's cricket board, also known as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Pakistan Cricket announced that Mohsin Naqvi was elected as the 37th chairman of the PCB unanimously and unopposed. The appointment took place during the Board of Governors' meeting at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.
"Mr Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has been elected unanimously and unopposed as the Pakistan Cricket Board’s 37th Chairman today," said Pakistan Cricket in a tweet.
The meeting took place under the eyes of the interim chairman Shah Khawar, who announced the news of Mohsin Naqvi's unanimous election for the PCB's chairman post.
"Mohsin Naqvi was elected unopposed as the Chairman of PCB, he will serve as the chairman for three years starting from today," Khawar told media at the NCA.
Talking about Mohsin Naqvi, the 45-year-old is a media mogul and also a caretaker chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab. Khawar highlighted that there is no conflict of interest and that Mohsin Naqvi can serve as the chairman of PCB and the chief minister together.
Zaka Ashraf's resignation from interim chairman's post
Zaka Ashraf's resignation as chairman of the PCB's Management Committee on January 19 came as a major development. Ashraf, who was appointed to the PCB's Board of Governors on July 6, 2023, assumed leadership of the Management Committee, a role previously occupied by Najam Sethi. His exit was announced following Pakistan's disappointing performance in the fourth T20I against New Zealand on January 19, resulting in a seven-wicket defeat.
In November 2023, Pakistan's Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar extended Ashraf's tenure at the Management Committee. Despite leading Pakistan through two significant cricketing events, the Asia Cup 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, Ashraf's term saw the national team underperform, failing to reach the Asia Cup final and missing out on a semi-final berth in the World Cup.
Shah Khawar took the reigns after Zaka Ashraf's resignation
Shah Khawar was named the interim chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on January 24, following Zaka Ashraf's resignation from the position. A Supreme Court advocate and the PCB's Election Commissioner, Shah Khawar stepped into this pivotal role amid a significant transition within the organization.
Khawar served as the temporary head of the PCB until new Board elections took place, ensuring continuity in the board's leadership.
