The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a massive step towards the future of Pakistan cricket by appointing veteran cricketer Azhar Ali as the head of youth development. This newly created position aims to nurture young talent and build a strong foundation for the future of Pakistan cricket.
Azhar Ali appointed Pakistan cricket's head of youth development
The former Pakistan's Test captain Azhar, who is already a member of the national selection committee, will now oversee the development of young cricketers. This appointment comes at a time when Pakistan cricket has faced challenges, including inconsistent performances and leadership changes. By investing in youth development, the PCB hopes to revitalize the team and ensure its long-term success.
Azhar Ali's primary responsibility will be to revamp the grassroots cricket structure in Pakistan and collaborate with local state associations to identify and nurture young talent. Pakistan cricket has been plagued by instability and political interference, which has hindered the development of young players. Azhar's appointment came after Pakistan team's crushing 0-3 T20I series defeat against Australia.
Azhar Ali, a seasoned cricketer with 97 Test matches and 19 centuries to his name, brings a wealth of experience to this role. He served as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team from 2016 to 2020 and has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by young cricketers.
In his first reaction, the veteran cricketer expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity to take on the new role. Azhar shared that he and his team are committed to identifying promising young talent and providing them with the support and guidance needed to reach the highest level of cricket.
“I am honoured and excited to take on this important role. Having risen through the age-group ranks and played extensive club and domestic cricket, I understand the critical role grassroots development plays in shaping future stars," Azhar said in a statement.
“Significant strides have already been made in this area and I look forward to working with my colleagues to further elevate our youth development programme further. Our goal is to identify promising talent and equip them with the tools to excel at the highest level," he concluded.
