Nepal men's cricket skipper Sandeep Lamichhane has been arrested on his arrival in Kathmandu on October 6. On arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Lamichhane was taken into police custody.
In a video shared by Kantipur TV on their social media, the 22-year-old can be seen being escorted by police personnel. Lamichhane had a handkerchief on his hands to hide the handcuffs.
In September, the star Nepal cricketer was accused by a minor of raping her in a hotel in country's capital. Following the incident, an FIR was filed at Gaushala Metropolitan Police Circle.
The minor alleged that the cricketer took her to various places in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur on August 21, a day before he was expected to leave for a tour. As she got late and could not go back to her hostel past curfew time, she had to stay at the hotel with Lamichhane.
At the time of FIR, Lamichhane was in West Indies for recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022.
“I am innocent. I’ve decided to take a leave from CPL and go back to my country within a few days. I am ready to face all these baseless allegations. Hope the law acts equal to everyone,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Last week, Lamichhane shared in a post on Facebook saying that he will return to Nepal and fight a legal battle to prove himself innocent.
“With great hope and strength, I hereby confirm that I am reaching to my home country Nepal on this 6th October 2022 and will submit myself to the authority of Nepal to fight a legal battle against false allegation,” the post read.
Earlier, the court had moved to Interpol — the International Criminal Police Organisation — to file a 'diffusion notice', an international alert which notifies law enforcement authorities in one country that those of another country are seeking the arrest of a specific person.
