Rohit Sharma is reported to be the next vice-captain of India’s Test team after reports have gathered pace. Rohit who is not in the team for the ongoing Test series against New Zealand is expected to be back in the squad for the upcoming South Africa tour. Rohit who is currently the captain of the T20I side is likely to take over the reins of vice-captain from fellow Mumbaikar Ajinkya Rahane.
The news comes in as; Ajinkya Rahane who has been struggling for form with the national team is likely to be dropped from the squad that will travel to South Africa for a three-match Test series. Even if the Mumbai-based Rahane is retained in the squad, he is most likely to be relieved of the duties of vice-captain.
Rahane who led India to a Test series win in Australia earlier this year has a proven track record as a standing captain. In his six matches so far as the skipper of the side, India have won four while the other two have ended in draws. However, his flat performances with the bat have seen him go under the radar failing to score a hundred in his last 22 innings. Matter of fact, he has scored only two fifties in that period.
With big competition for places in the team and the Shreyas Iyer’s resurgence has seen Rahane drop down the pecking order. He is currently sidelined by injury and is not involved in the second Test match in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma though will be poised to make an impact as he guided India to a T20I series win against New Zealand and also has more than enough credit in the captaincy bag, winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) on multiple occasions as captain. Rohit’s appointment though could possibly seal the end of the road for Rahane in the Test team.
