India's wicket keeper-batter Richa Ghosh has been signed by the Hobart Hurricanes for the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2021. Ghosh becomes the seventh Indian player to sign for the league this season after Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues (Melbourne Renegades), Shafali Verma, Radha Yadav (Sydney Sixers), and Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma (Sydney Thunder). Ghosh has been signed in place of Lizelle Lee, who had signed with the Hurricanes, but recently withdrew from the tournament citing the need to take an indefinite break from cricket due to heavy schedule, bio-bubbles and quarantine requirements.
Ghosh made her international debut for India in 2020 Tri-National Women’s T20 series in the lead up to the ICC T20 World Cup, in which India ended up being the runners-up. The Indian middle-order batter made her ODI debut on the Australian soil last month as part of India’s multi-format Australia tour. Expressing her excitement on signing with the franchise Ghosh said,
“I am very excited to be playing in the WBBL this year. I am thankful to the Hurricanes for this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to coming to Tasmania and meeting up with my new team mates.”
