In the first ODI against England, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was removed for just two runs, demonstrating that the format change had little effect on his luck. Saqib Mahmood dismissed him after Rohit attempted a flip shot and got a leading edge as the ball sailed up in the air for the fielder at mid-on to make an easy catch. Everyone is currently quite concerned about Rohit's form. Although he has been having trouble in Test cricket, there were strong expectations that he would improve in limited-overs play.
Rohit, however, left cheaply after appearing uneasy throughout his time at the crease. His recent performances have raised questions over his future. He may not be selected for India on the England Test tour if he does not perform well in the Champions Trophy, and his Test future already appears bleak. He had already rested himself out of the starting lineup for the fifth Test match against Australia in Sydney, and he would need to perform well to get back into the starting lineup.
Indian captain gets trolled after another poor show
As a result of his subpar performance in the first ODI, the Indian skipper was mercilessly trolled across social media. In just five of the previous sixteen innings, Rohit has scored ten or more runs, with just one of those innings reaching a fifty.
Shreyas Iyer smashes fifty
On the other hand, star batter Shreyas Iyer who was making his return to International cricket for the first time since August 2024 put on an astonishing performance by smashing a blazing fifty. He played a 59-run knock off just 36 balls and batted with a strike rate of 163.89. His innings included 9 boundaries and two sixes. Jacob Bethell caught him on the pads to end his stay at the pitch.
India bowled out England on 248 runs with Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets each. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell smashed crucial fifties to help their team reach a respectable total. India lost their openers quickly in a 249-run chase. However, Gill and Iyer steadied the ship by smashing fifties. At the time of writing India is at 170/3 in 26 overs.
