In a nail-biting face-off, New York Warriors managed to pull off a thrilling last-ball win against the Atlanta Riders, with Sohail Khan grabbing headlines after picking four wickets in as many deliveries on August 22 (Tuesday) in Lauderhill. The ex-Pakistan bowler achieved the milestone in the final over of Atlanta Riders' innings when he struck on the first four deliveries of the over.
After being invited to bat, the Riders showcased a magnificent partnership with Lendl Simmons and Robin Uthappa. They managed to produce 81 runs in just 7.5 overs. Simmons led the charge with an explosive 41 runs off 23 deliveries, stunning the crowd with two powerful boundaries and four towering sixes. Uthappa, meanwhile, provided ample support with 32 runs off 25 balls, ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking.
The match, however, took an unexpected turn after both the openers were sent back to the pavilion within a span of three balls, with the Riders at 83/2 in 8.1 overs. But Hamilton Masakadza's fiery six on his first ball offered some respite for the Riders, taking the score to 98 for 2. The real drama unfolded in the 10th over with Sohail's bowling masterclass. Dismissing Masakadza and Hammad Azam, he soon claimed a hat-trick by sending Grant Elliott back, a feat earlier achieved by Fidel Edwards on the same day. Khan's magic didn't end there as he dismissed Harmeet Singh, marking four wickets in four consecutive balls.
New York Warriors’ chase began on a shaky note, landing them at 15/2 by the end of the second over. The situation seemed bleak at 39/3, especially after Harmeet's dismissal of Tillakaratne Dilshan. However, the tides began to turn in the Warriors' favor as Shahid Afridi and Jonathan Carter began to unleash. Afridi's onslaught on Nasir Hossain, followed by Carter's back-to-back boundaries off Elias Sunny, rejuvenated the team's hope.
Rayad Emrit's pivotal breakthrough, removing Afridi, and Mohammad Irfan's tight ninth over almost ensured a Riders' win. However, in the climactic final over, Carter and Misbah-ul-Haq's spectacular hits against Kamrul Islam turned the tables. With two sixes from Carter and as many maximums from Misbah, the Warriors clinched the game.Â
