Three Sri Lankan women's team players have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead their World Cup Qualifier match against Netherlands. All three players have been sent into isolation and will no longer be part of the opening encounter. The World Cup 2022 qualifiers are taking place in Zimbabwe to determine who will be part of the showpiece event in March 2022.

One player showed mild symptoms as further tests were conducted. Thereafter, two more players tested positive for the virus. The names of the players were not revealed, but it was confirmed that no other player was tested positive. Rest of the squad has gone into bio bubble and the players have started to train separately ahead of the qualifiers.

“We have playing squads of 15 at the event, which allows for injuries and illness, including COVID-19 to be managed, and in addition teams have had the option of bringing travelling reserves with them. As you would expect, the remainder of the squad are being closely monitored and they will all be re-tested ahead of taking to the field on Tuesday, “ an ICC source said.

“The event bio-security plan provides us with protocols to manage positive tests effectively with the intention of enabling the event to proceed whilst keeping all other players and participants safe, “ the source added.

It was also confirmed that regular tests will be done throughout the tournament and all the players will be monitored in due course. Australia, England, India, South Africa and hosts New Zealand have all qualified for the 2022 World Cup and three more teams will join them through the qualifiers.
